Obituary of Janis Gail Floyd

Janis Gail Burney Floyd, age 73, of Boxelder, went to be with her heavenly father on February 5, 2011, after a hard fought battle against breast cancer. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family. A celebration of life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the Salem Baptist Church in Boxelder with Rev. Bill Dickey officiating. Services are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. Honorary Pallbearers are Al Craig, Jim Rinehart, Britt Martin, Gene Simmons, C.A. Prather, Bill Daniel and the members of the Boxelder VFD. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Glen Floyd of Boxelder; two daughters, Amy Avery of Tyler and Laurie Jones and husband Glenn “Beau” of Colleyville; granddaughters, Maggie Belle and Jordan Lynn Avery of Tyler; a sister, Betty Maroney and husband Kenneth of Corpus Christi; two nephews, Mark and Dave Maroney; a niece, Tiffany Johnston; and cousins, Johnny and Geneva Heard and Peggy and Lowell McKanna. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Edna Burney. Janis grew up in the beautiful hill country community of Center Point, Texas. Her family was devotedly active in the First Baptist Church of Center Point, where her father was a long-time deacon. After she graduated Center Point High School, she attended Southwest Texas Teachers College in San Marcos. In 1960, she married the love of her life, Glen Floyd of Boxelder, Texas. The wedding ceremony was officiated by Glen’s father, Chester Dow Floyd, and was held at the First Baptist Church of Center Point. The couple moved to Colleyville, Texas in 1962, where they raised their two daughters and resided there until 1992. Once retired, they moved to Boxelder, Texas. Prior to this move, they had built their country home on the Floyd family farm and were happy to be moving to the country. Together they enjoyed beautiful country days together, working in the garden and being involved with their community. Janis was a member of the Red Hatters Club, known as the “Yak Yak Honey’s” and enjoyed great times with her friends. She served for 10 years as Secretary/Treasurer of the Boxelder Fire Department and also volunteered in the Ladies Auxiliary at ETMC Clarksville. Janis was proud of her family, especially her wonderful granddaughters, Maggie and Jordan, with whom she loved spending as much time as possible. This sweet lady will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. She never met a stranger. She will always be remembered for her charm, elegance and grace.
