Obituary of Lorna Geer Sheppard

Lorna Jean Geer Sheppard was born on Sept 28, 1947 in Dallas, and passed away on December 1, 2016 in Carrollton. Lorna was raised by G.W. and Vashti Geer in Manchester, then the family moved to Clarksville,in 1956. After Clarksville High School, she attended the University of Texas at Austin. She loved her decade long tenure at OKC Corp. in Dallas. She then retired for several years until 1985, when her and business partner Gayle Mudge Horton opened GaLa’s Hallmark in Carrollton. Gayle and Lorna sold the store in 1991. At this point, she became a full-time author. Having grown up just a block from the Charles DeMorse house in Clarksville, coupled with her deep interest in Texas history, she always had a fascination with the “old house.” Her first book, An Editor’s View of Early Texas, published 1998, is based on excerpts from The Northern Standard; an early Texas newspaper published in Clarksville through the mid-1800s. Lorna, and co-author Richard B. Marrin, penned four subsequent books that are a treasure to the early Texas history buff. She is survived by her son, Scotty Sheppard and his wife Chris, from her previous marriage to Jerry P. Sheppard. Grandsons are Luke Sheppard, Jacob Sheppard and Cole Sheppard. Her extended family includes a half-brother David Harris and his sister Nina, their mother Berta Jean Geer Turner. A memorial service will be held in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home on December 16th at 1:00 p.m. with Steve Marx officiating. A reception will follow at Clarksville Country Club. All friends and family are invited to attend. A private family graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m., noon, Friday, December 9, 2016, in Fairview Cemetery with Steve Marx officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
