Obituary of Mary Sue Porterfield

Mary Sue Porterfield, age 89, of Clarksville, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Clarksville Nursing Center.

Mary Sue was born December 25, 1927, in Detroit the only child ofLee and Minnie Causey Coursey.  She graduated from North Texas State University at the age of 19 with a major in music and a minor in education.  Mary Sue taught high school English in Annona and De Kalb and taught music to many, many students from all over the area.  She served as the Activities Director at both Clarksville Nursing Center and Regency Nursing Home for many years.

Mary Sue will best be remembered as an accomplished pianist.  She was a member and organist of Eastern Star.  She was resident pianist for both Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club, of which she was Rotary Sweetheart for a number of years.  She played for innumerable civic functions, weddings, funerals, revivals and seved as pianist in multiple area churches.  She retired as the pianist from the Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, Dimple.  At the age of 70, she played a full classical concert at the Old Church Theater in Clarksville, where she was presented a bouquet of roses by Mayor Ann Rushing in recognition of her many years of community service.

Mary Sue enjoyed music, of course, and cooking with and for her family, sharing recipes, babying her dogs, playing games with her grandchildren and great-grands.  We all remember endless weekends, Disney storybooks, Diet Pepsi, chocolate covered cherries, and Chinese Checkers.  Her family will miss her and cherish her memory.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Clarksville Funeral Home.

Funeral services are set for 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2017, in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home with Pastor Cindy Baker Burnett officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

Survivors include her son, Gary Porterfield and wife, Paula of Clarksville; her daughter, Gail Green and husband, Alan of Clarksville; 8 grandchildren, Keith Green and wife Jennifer, Kevin Green, Heather Porterfield Palmer and husband, Brian, Jennifer Huddleston and husband, Cortney, Nathan Porterfield, Erin Guest and husband, Colby, Alison Porterfield and Ashley Pickering and husband Mike and 15 great grandchildren.
